Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) is passionate about providing high-quality services to our communities, residents and businesses. This means we must employ and retain the most talented and dedicated people.

Situated within the heart of the Cambridge-Peterborough Growth Area, Huntingdonshire is a beautiful district that boasts thriving market towns and many attractive villages, each with its own identity. We are an innovative and forward-thinking local authority whose residents are at the heart of our decision-making.

At HDC we want to employ staff who embody our icare values (Inspiring, Collaborative, Accountable, Respectful, Enterprising), all of which support our ultimate purpose of putting our customers first.

Job details

We are looking for an experienced Arboricultural Officer to help protect, manage and enhance the district’s trees and hedgerows. This is a varied and rewarding role where your professional expertise will directly influence planning decisions and help shape the local environment for current and future generations.

About the role

You will provide specialist arboricultural advice across the council, ensuring statutory duties relating to trees, hedgerows, Conservation Areas and Tree Preservation Orders are met. Working closely with Development Management colleagues, you will assess the impact of development on trees, advise on appropriate mitigation and conditions, and help secure long‑term environmental benefits.

The role includes responsibility for Tree Preservation Orders, enforcement of tree legislation, and representing the council at committees, appeals and other formal settings when required. You will also play a key role in delivering the council’s Tree Strategy and providing expert advice on the council’s own tree stock, working collaboratively with colleagues across planning, conservation and environmental services.

About you

You are an experienced arboriculture professional with a strong understanding of tree management within the planning process. You will hold appropriate arboricultural qualifications and have detailed knowledge of relevant legislation and best practice. Confident, organised and professionally credible, you are able to make sound judgements, produce clear reports and explain technical issues to a wide range of audiences.

You will be comfortable working independently while contributing positively to a multidisciplinary team, and able to manage competing priorities in a customer‑focused environment. Strong communication skills and a full driving licence are essential.

If you are passionate about trees and want to make a real difference through public service, we would be delighted to hear from you.

An offer of employment is conditional upon having the right to work in the UK. HDC does not hold a Sponsorship Licence and is unable to provide a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) or take over sponsorship for any role.
