Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) held a special event in early March to rededicate the portrait of Thomas Herbert Burgess, former Mayor of St Ives and the first Chairman of HDC.
Thomas Burgess, known locally as Bert, played a significant role in shaping the community during a period of major local change. His leadership was central to the redevelopment of the St Ives leisure centre in the 1970s, coinciding with the reorganisation of local government that created HDC in its current form. In recognition of his service, the main hall was named Burgess Hall, where his portrait has welcomed visitors for many years.
As the portrait had become faded over time, the rededication provided an opportunity to refresh and formally honour Bert’s contribution. The event celebrated his legacy of public service, highlighted Huntingdonshire’s civic heritage and acknowledged the longstanding commitment of both elected members and council officers who have shaped the district across the decades.
Cllrs David Keane, Sally Howell and Julie Kerr who is also Mayor of St Ives, attended the ceremony, alongside members of the Burgess family.
Sylvie Day, one of Bert’s grandchildren, said: "For our family, this rededication is deeply meaningful. It’s a reminder not only of my grandfather’s loyalty to St Ives, but also of the values he cared about so strongly - community, service and pride in place. We are touched that his legacy continues to be remembered and appreciated."
Sarah Conboy, Leader of HDC, said: "Strong leadership has always shaped Huntingdonshire and Bert embodied that. His dedication to improving life across the district continues to inspire us today and it’s important we honour those whose vision helped guide our community forward.”
Cllr David Keane added: “This rededication for Bert not only honours the work of one of the greatest friends Huntingdonshire has known but also reminds us of the importance of safeguarding our local heritage as we plan for the future.”
