Spring Common is named after the natural spring that runs through the middle of this 13 acre area of public land. With a peaceful pond and open grassland, it is great for walking the dog, having a picnic, meeting friends or spending time watching the wildlife.
Facilities
Spring Common has public access at all times, but there are no indoor facilities.
Educational opportunities
Spring Common is within walking distance of many schools in Huntingdon and provides learning opportunities for children of all ages. There are no facilities at the Common, so half-day visits are ideal.
Please email hinchingbrookecountrypark@huntingdonshire.gov.uk if you are interested in organising a school visit to Spring Common.
We also welcome youth clubs, children’s play schemes and Scout and Guide groups. Please contact the ranger on 01480 388666 to discuss your visit.
Volunteering
The rangers from Hinchingbrooke Country Park hold conservation work parties to look after the site. We always need volunteers to help with practical tasks, such as tree and shrub planting, grassland management work, pond clearance, litter picking and much more.
If you would like further information about volunteering at Spring Common, please contact our Community Volunteer Coordinator by email at Paxton.Pits@huntingdonshire.gov.uk, download an application form [DOCX, 63Kb] [DOCX, 63KB] or pick up an application form from the Visitor Centre at Hinchingbrooke Country Park or Paxton Pits Nature Reserve. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who would like to carry out site checking and litter picking at Spring Common or who would like to carry out wildlife surveys.
Wildlife
The variety of marsh, ponds, streams, grassland and scrub provide a mixture of habitats for many mammals, amphibians, invertebrates and birds. More than 15 species of birds and over 70 different types of plants have been recorded at the Common.
