We all have neighbours and we want to live in a safe community where we feel respected. We do however know that issues can happen, and it is important these issues are resolved politely and quickly to prevent any unnecessary escalation.
Every person has different routines and opinions of what is acceptable behaviour. It is important to remember that we are all neighbours and need to be considerate to everyone.
Being a ‘Good Neighbour’
-
Check in on each other
-
Let someone know if you’re concerned about a neighbour
-
Try to keep the noise at a respectful level
-
Accept that your neighbours may engage in a different lifestyle
-
Be kind.
What to do if you’re having issues with your neighbour?
-
Ask yourself - am I being reasonable?
-
How often is it happening?
-
Talk to your neighbour. They might not realise they are causing a problem.
Approaching your neighbour to talk about the issue
-
Be polite and friendly
-
Stay calm
-
Be respectful
-
Consider what you want to say before talking to them. Write it down on a note if this helps - view our Dear Neighbour Letter [PDF, 0.1MB]
-
Be honest with your neighbour about the issue and the impact it has on you
-
Listen to your neighbour
-
Consider compromising to find a solution
-
If you feel an argument is beginning, the best solution is to walk away.
What to do if this hasn’t resolved the problem?
-
Consider using our Dear Neighbour Letter [PDF, 0.1MB]. This may make it easier to explain the problem and the impact it is having on you
-
Keep a record of all interventions you have tried to resolve the issue
