Construction work will be starting on the new Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub this month, marking a significant milestone in the enormous investment in leisure and wellbeing facilities.
Following the commencement of works on the new 3G pitch earlier in September, Universal Group are now beginning work on the main building at One Leisure Huntingdon. The project forms part of a major redevelopment programme that will transform leisure provision in Huntingdon, creating state-of-the-art facilities, enhanced fitness and health spaces, improved accessibility and a range of opportunities for residents of all ages to stay active and connected. It aims to generate over £1.6 million in wellbeing benefits through increased youth participation in sport and physical activity.
Huntingdonshire District Council has committed £30 million to the project, with £10.3 million of Community Infrastructure Levy funding. Once complete, the Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub will provide a modern environment that supports community participation in sport and physical activity whilst helping to tackle health inequalities across the district.
The wider programme also includes padel and pickleball courts, the completion of the new 3G football pitch, and further improvements to existing facilities. Construction work is expected to continue through to Autumn 2028.
Councillor Debbie Mickelburgh, Executive Councillor for Communities, Health and Leisure said:
“The start of construction is an exciting step forward for the Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub project. We look forward to seeing the hub take shape and the positive impact it will have in supporting active lifestyles and improving health outcomes for the residents in our district.”
Emma Butler, Principal of St Peter’s School said: “We are delighted that St Peter’s School can play a role in helping to bring this exciting vision to life. It will create outstanding opportunities for our students to develop their sporting talents, build confidence and enjoy being active, whilst also providing a valuable resource for the wider community.
Councillor Patrick Kadewere, Mayor or Huntingdon said: “Huntingdon Town Council is proud ot have worked alongside Huntingdonshire District Council, St Peter’s School and the many sports clubs that call this site home to help shape plans for this important investment. The new Sport and Health Hub will create opportunities for people of all ages to be active, improve their wellbeing, and enjoy sport for generations to come.”
The council will continue to work with partners, stakeholders and local residents throughout the construction period, with further updates on progress shared as key milestones are reached.
