Huntingdonshire District Council has marked the start of construction on the Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub, with work now underway on the new 3G Football pitch.

Representatives from the council, project partners and stakeholders gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction on Phase 1 of the new Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub project.

The ceremony celebrated the first phase of a wider redevelopment programme that will deliver modern leisure, sport, and health facilities for Huntingdonshire residents. The football pitch works are scheduled to be completed in Autumn 2026.

The Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub project represents one of the most significant investments in leisure provision in the district's history. Planning permission has already been secured and Huntingdonshire District Council has approved a £30 million investment to support the project, enabling progression from detailed design to construction and completion.

Once complete, the hub will provide expanded swimming facilities, enhanced health and fitness opportunities, improved accessibility, new outdoor sports facilities, helping tackle health inequalities and support active lifestyles for residents of all ages.

The wider programme includes construction of the main hub building, new padel and pickleball courts, and improvements to existing facilities, with works continuing through to Autumn 2028.

Councillor Debbie Mickelburgh, Executive Member for Communities, Health and Leisure, said: "Today's groundbreaking ceremony marks an important milestone for the Huntingdon Sport and Health Hub. After years of planning and collaboration with our partners, it is fantastic to see work now underway on site. This development will create modern, accessible facilities that support healthier lifestyles, improve wellbeing and provide opportunities for people of all ages to be active."

The council will continue to work closely with partners, stakeholders and residents as the project progresses and further updates will be shared throughout construction.
